What is a Pathologist? - An Introduction
Monday Aug 15, 2022
Monday Aug 15, 2022
Medical pathologists examine bodies, body tissues, and body fluids as an integral part of their medical duties as licensed physicians with Doctors of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctors of Osteopathy (D.O.) degrees. Blood and tissue samples are tested by them to confirm diagnoses, and they play an important role in many treatment plans.
In addition to medical school, pathologists must complete at least three years of residency training. Approximately 80 percent of pathologists choose to study anatomic and clinical pathology during their residency programs that increases the residency program length to four years.
The American Board of Pathology and the American Osteopathic Board of Pathology administer board certification examinations after completing residency.
